They had me until the terrible flying ninja CGI.

Just seems unnecessary. Meh.

And I'm not a traditionalist but SS's costume is stupid if you're going to have him fight. I've seen the actor fight in a couple other movies and this doesn't seem like him because that damn leather is restricting his movement. The Matrix was full of characters fighting with coats but they didn't choose leather.

I dunno fellas. My expectation thus far is that this movie will consist of bare minimum plot to bridge together nearly unrelated "big bang" scenes in all kinds of places and evironments. Seems chronic with action movies lately...

Biggest dump on earth
Hope the changes they made turn out well. The mountain scene is great but Monkeywrench is right doesn't make sense at all. More explosions the better!! I hope this one is a home run.

In at least 2 of the reviews, they call Zartan "Vartan". At least spellcheck proper names of characters, even if they're made up and you don't care about the fluff material.

I love Vosloo as Zartan. He's been a favorite actor of mine since the Darkman and Mummy movies. His small role in ROC was my highlight of that movie. lol. I find myself whisteling that tune sometimes. Zartan is my favorite GI Joe Character.

Got to love him in Hard Target with him and Lance Hendrikson vs JCVD.

Here's a bit from Chu on future movies...what he wanted to do and what he couldn't and how it may develope in future installments...

Jon Chu Talks Building A Foundation With G.I. JOE: RETALIATION And Future Films

Director Jon M. Chu talks about building a foundation for characters and story in his G.I. Joe sequel, saying that it established a different tone and reinvents many things. He also teases its effect on future installments in the series.

Paul Romano - 3/23/2013

Speaking with GeneralJoes/WOJM at the London premiere of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, director Jon M. Chu talks about how the sequel establishes a different tone/feel from 2009's Rise Of Cobra. He discusses the film's building a foundation for its characters, and says that the roots will lead into further character development in the future. "It is a sense of, both scared and relieved at the same time… a sense of responsibility to tell… there’s so many things about G.I. Joe, I know what the fans want, because I hear it every day. I know what they wish for, and I know what our movie has, and what it doesn’t have. What we didn’t have the ability to necessarily do yet. We’re building a foundation for a different tone, a different feel for the movie, reinventing a lot of things. But it’s just the beginning. Do we want to get more into Cobra Commander? Yes. Did we not do that enough here? For sure. But we have to build some roots before we go through all that." Chu had this to say when asked if this foundation would lead to a third G.I. Joe film. "I hope it’s the foundation for a lot of other things. I think that the G.I. Joe world is huge, I mean even including Action Man…I bet there’s an Action Man pissed that London just got destroyed and he’s going to want some vengeance. There are so many things, Cobra Island, and all the different characters , even our movie as it is is too many characters, so we’re just trying to find that balance. We had to strip a lot of stuff out, consolidate or reveal it later in the movie than we had originally planned, because we had to… adapt. There are a lot of people who have seen the first movie, a lot of people who have not seen the first movie. A lot of people who know nothing about G.I. Joe, and a lot of people who know a lot about G.I. Joe. Some people who know just about the 12â€￾ action figures." For GeneralJoes/WOJM's full interview with Chu, click the source link below.

I'm hoping it does well enough that they consider making SEless Joe movies or some Joe movies that aren't tied to this storyline. A GI Joe: First Enlistment (like X-Men: First Class) would rock.

Isn't this a contradiction in terms?

I don't know...I'm not an English major...fellas, back me up

I don't think so.. he's saying he wants it to be more realistic so we don't have to be forced to suddenly "believe" that Ninjas can fly through the sky, evil organizations build giant underwater submarine bases in the arctic.. etc.

Though again this essentially turns GI JOE into any other Black Hawk Down-esque military action movie.

I think there may be a place for that somewhere, but likely not in a theatrical release. GI JOE: Resolute was kind of in that vein, and could be a good outlet if they ever go back to that well..

That could work. Problem I know what Eddie has said on other threads so I don't think this will be his "ultimate" dream.

Well we shouldn't discuss his 'ultimate' dreams.. those are not for public forums!

As for GI JOE.. yeah, I mean I get it, it'd be kinda cool to see some gritty as hell war movie, with the characters loosely based on the GI JOE team. Fighting some cruel as hell Cobra force that's actually bent on world domination. No blue and red lasers.. no cheesy gimmicks.. etc

Problem is it's just not the brand, and it's not ever going to be the brand I don't think.

It'd be like turning My Little Pony into some equestrian training video.. sure, it's still kinda topical.. but it deviates from the source material so much, what's the point?

I think because there was a period of time between the last cartoons and comics and then the return through Devil's Due that our generation tried to reinvent what GI Joe was really about instead of just acknowledging it was campy fun for kids. A gritty war film, while I enjoy them immensely, bring out a different kind of emotion that I don't want to feel with GI Joe. I need it to be just a little bit campy.

I never got into any of the comics after I was a kid in the 80's. I really didn't think about GI JOE from the early 90's until 2007 when I saw some of the 25th anniversary stuff.

I remember occasionally seeing the Valor vs Venom stuff in stories during the 00's, but they looked pretty shitty and nothing like I remembered GI JOE from the 1980's.

I never would have gotten into 'toys' again if it wasn't for the 25th line, and even then it was only due to the iconic packaging. I don't think I even OPENED any of the toys I bought until shortly before I started this website in 2009.

GI JOE was always about being somewhat campy.. that's what made it fun and enjoyable. I think there is a demand for a more realistic version out there.. but finding the right balance is tricky. I think something in the vein of "The Expendables" could be fun to watch, with the Joe's being a has-been group of soldiers from the 80's as well!

Post 1969 perhaps Joe got "campy", but it started as a military toy line.

But we're talking ARAH. If we went back and tried to make Joe in the vein of pre-1969, then the enemies aren't going to be Nazi wannabe blue pajama terrorists.

ARAH was never really a realistic military line from the beginning. The first wave had a laser trooper, laser artillery and a jet pack.
