Yeah, SDCC is double bad (for people who want these). Not only are they a pain to get, more expensive than the normal ass-raping prices, and then there is the fact that there will be a dozen other interesting SDCC items from other lines.
I'll never forget a couple of years ago when SDCC offered up the Starscream Skystriker, the carded MU sentinel, the lost wave of Indiana Jones, the SW Death Star "Revenge" cardbacks set, and the two versions of Zarana all in the same weekend. For me, that was a four-figure gouge event.
I just hate the SDCC anxiety. The constant twinges of panic and regret.
- Am I going to find X?
- Am I going to overpay?
- Am I going to miss out waiting for a "good" deal?
- Am I going to regret my purchase?
- Do I need this?
- Am I going to have a hole in my collection that I'll regret if I skip it?
- Will I have to stay up all night one day next week waiting for the manufacturer's joke of a website to put the two extras on sale?
- Will my wife find out I'm a plastic addicted nutjob?
- Why do I care about this? Maybe I should stop collecting altogether.
- You know, that other line looks cool. I don't have any of those. Maybe I should start collecting those instead, starting with this here exclusive item...
- Where am I going to store this? I don't have any more display space. Why would I buy it just to bury it in a box?
- F@#$ it. There! It's a buy-it-now a full $3 lower than the going rate of $175! Buy! Buy! Buy!
And then you do that dance for 6-8 different toy lines. It's stressful, so much so that last year, I bought only two SDCC items. It just wasn't worth the expense or the stress. I actually hope that there is nothing I want this year so I can ignore the whole circus. Fortunately, Mattel is making it easy for me to pass on the kidney stone twins.
