Following the revelation that COBRA was a front for the Crimson Guard, Europe's aristocracy seeking to reestablish monarchical rule across the globe; the GI Joe team was folded into the SHIELD organization. While some team members were peeved and quit active duty, most were eager to embrace the widened scope of their duties and the attendant increased support.
One of these was Seymour Fine, codename Sci-Fi; promoted to Major upon accepting command of the resurrected BattleForce program, given the new '2100' extension to imply a farther and more open-ended view of military research and field application. Under Major Sci-Fi's tenure, the BattleForce 2100 team of combat physicists, engineers, and other scientists and technicians have been instrumental in developing practical combat applications for technologies they themselves have invented, and technologies recovered from a wide variety of non-NATO sources such as the Stargate program, the Kree/Thanagarian invasion, and Reed Richards' Fantastic Foundation.
