Modular Viper Helmet

I've been working on a Viper helmet that can be removable. The current Viper heads are way too small to ever accomplish this but I can make one digitally to where the inner walls are about .3-.5mm thick so the helmet won't be too big and allow for it to fit on a ME head.

I'm kind of basing it off of Sideshow's design with some elements from some IDW references to kind of give it a little more of a modern update.

I then started to think about how this should be the standard Viper helmet and have modular pieces like an Ops Core helmet that change what type of unit is using it. I can make different face shields or just make the helmet without. I can put holes on the sides and design Alley Viper face shields, Night Viper visors, or Tele Viper tele com kits to fit them or I can add Ops Core mounts on the sides and on the forehead for NV, scopes, lights, and cameras.

I have a basic idea but to be honest, I'm a little naive in terms of what some of this gear does and should look like so any help in the area of deciding what would work would be great.

Like the SAW Viper one you did? Except without the head inside, obviously. Anyway, I like the idea. Especially the varying face shields and the other options to give the variety to the Viper Corps without giving them wildly varied uniforms.

I can see Cobra using knock-off AN/PVS-7s or 14s, or even antiquated PNV-57s. Dunno how it's gonna look considering the absurdity of the Viper helmet in general.

Aren't they supposed to have intergrated communications gear in them? I can see a Viper RTO having a linkup running to a manpac radio, but I don't see any kind of mod to the helmet being wholly necessary.

I would agree if I were to subcribe to the whole JOE mythos and go with what has been established as technical data perhaps. I'm not a huge fan of the JOE fantasy aspect myself, but what Giga is proposing just sounds cool from a purely visual standpoint.

I could maybe see this being some form of advanced future warrior piece of equipment, as oppossed to slapping it on a Viper - but that's just me.

Kinda like Halo helmets having attachments. Not needed based on the tech really, but it makes for cool looking helmet mods.

I would mod those side gills on the faceplate and either have some sort of vent or comm port there that you could attach a cool gas mask to. Just a suggestion, of course.

The cool thing about the shock trooper was the more modular helmet design. I do think that night vision attachments or blast shield harness points would be cool to add, but I was trying to think of things like comm or air filtration that would be built in to each helmet versus a bolt-on style.

What can I say, I'm not a huge fan of the motorcycle helmet-as-combat gear look. It might look cool if you slap a NV monocle on there, but then again it may look patently ridiculous given the mirrored face plate. That's always gonna be the hang up. That face plate.

Then again, I prefer the pre '90s equipment aesthetics, so future warrior with intergrated helmet doodads and XM8s/G11s/whatever the bleeding edge may be at this second are never gonna be of interest to me, as a figure I'd buy or a custom I'd consider making. I just dropped a couple of equipment designation numbers so he could do his own GIS research.

I think the AV helmet lends itself to better modifications, especially NV/filtration devices.

Shit man... I no fan of it myself! And I agree with the mirrored face-plate thing.

But then we have stuff like this being designed -

Throw in a tinted faceshield of some kind and you have something close to the Viper, with better functionality.

Very similar to the Retaliation troopers.

I'd forgo the face shield and use a detachable MFS and flight helmet-style retractable balistic visor. It gives the the "faceless" Cobra trope without the functionally useless mirrored plate.

Yeah... I've seen it. Would obviously be nice to have for real-world stuff, but let's not totally derail Giga's desire to update/improve a Joe fantasy helmet. I think it's a sound idea that has it's uses, depending on how one would use it of course. For instance, some of the characters Rick makes could use something like this. Very fitting for his future war stuff.

I agree though... the MFS/face shield combo would be cool to have.

It's a flaw of mine, I have to at least attempt to thwart the fantasy aspects of G.I. Joe from spreading too far, just like I have to herald the complete superiority of 1:18 military vehicles. :D

Anyhow, I'm interested to see where Giga goes with it, even if I don't find the results particularly useful from a personal customizing standpoint.

I think I'm going to end up stealing some of this. I like the idea of having a balistic visor that slides down. If I could making it function that way without being too big is another thing entirely. I'm okay with having two near identical versions that I can just swap out depending on the pose I'm going for but I try to design items with others in mind.

For this, I'm thinking I could make a standard lightweight helmet that can replace the stupid NAZI/Wannabe Star Wars helmets they give the blueshirts and then make that outer shell/cheek guard item as a separate attachment. As much as some are trying to influence away from some of the original design, I think it still needs these basic design elements to fit with the title of this thread.

I love the modular helmet idea...being standard issue and having it being modded to fit the particular Viper that's wearing it is a really cool idea...
