Do any of you know of a source for decals that carry misc. markings and could be used for 1:18th projects...something that might be a bit sci-fi even?

Vexilarius will make decals, but it won't be cheap.

The only other person making them was doing WWII stuff, and sold his stock and such to Monkey Depot. Unfortunately they were done with an ALPS printer, and last I heard it had gone down for good.

Now, if you have a good home printer you can buy a Testors Decal Kit. Once you get the hang of sizing I hear they work alright.

S.E. Mich :(
I think I posted a link in the dio parts suggestion thread...it's a great link to a guy on eBay who has all kinds of dry rub decals (which look better than anything else IMO)...you could spend all day looking thru what he has...

check out verlinden or archer dry rub decals too, they have quality stuff, and they should have a good bit in 1:16

Too bad that it's eBay and a seller in China. LOTS of useful stuff and I only browsed 2 pages.

But if I do that, I'd have to cut it close to the actual decal so there isn't a white outline, correct?

Yes, but you really want to save the white paper for decals that require white in them.
