I found an old, half completed Budo figure in my neverending WIP drawer and decided to pick up working on him again...

Swappable heads... the first is an old comic pack Tunnel Rat with the facemask from a LEGO Green Goblin (thanks to Obi-Shinobi for that one) and the other is the more common Budo face - Thor's Hogun. The helmet and torso are from the Ages of Action Samurai and the rest of the parts are from the Resolute comic pack Storm Shadow.

My biggest question is the armor - should I paint it all red?

That's a really good concept for a Samurai Budo. I'd go with brown, green, and gray for the colors. Red isn't really a color I associate with Budo except for maybe some detailing.

Great start, bro. My only question - did you consider using the mempo from the AoA head? It's smaller, and would fit the face much better. That Lego piece was cool, oh... 3-4 yrs ago. :D

I was thinking the mempo was distractingly large.

Well that just goes to show you how long this has been a WIP... the mempo on the AoA Samurai is molded to his face. I guess I can do a push mold and then make a green copy thin enough to glue to TR's face...

Push mold, sure. I cut mine from the face and dremeled it down - pain in the ass holding on to such a small piece. Flew out of my hand at least 3 times.

That looks fantastic! I've never really been into Budo, but he looks great.

One of the contests for officers.

Agreed - looks great. I never understood the need for a Samurai on the Joes, because you know, sword...gunfight, but then again the way Cobra shoots he could probably get close enough to use the sword the way they all shoot.

Samurai are more than just swords and armor. They lived by Bushido, the code of honor which instilled a very strong sense of duty into them. They were excellent martial artists and tacticians too. Samurai were often artists and artisans. Samurai teachings, such as the Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Mushashi, are even relevant today and can be applied towards personal success.

That said, a more modernized version of Budo would make more sense today but I still love a good Samurai custom. I think it was Stronox who recently made a pretty stellar update of Budo that looked more modern military combined with the Samurai aesthetic.

So, taking Doug's advice, I repainted Budo to better match his vintage color scheme...

Still some work to do. I also have plans for a more modern military-esque version of Budo as well, somewhere down the road.

Man, that's so tempting...though I always feel customs such as this are worth more than I'm willing to pay...
