MARVEL, SONY HAD SPIDER-MAN CROSSOVER TALKS

Marvel, Sony Had Spider-Man Crossover Talks - IGN

The wallcrawler was wanted for a new trilogy and Captain America: Civil War before discussions fell apart.

BY SCOTT COLLURAUpdate: It turns out that Sam Raimi, director of the original three Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies, has also been discussed within Sony regarding Spidey's future.

Could Marvel Still Make a Spidey Deal?

Though The Wall Street Journal updated their original story to delete any mention of Raimi, their initial report indicated that the studio has attempted to bring Raimi back to the fold as a director or producer. It's unclear why this was removed from TWSJ's article.

Additionally, it has been revealed that an animated Spider-Man comedy is in development at Sony from producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord (22 Jump Street, The Lego Movie).

Original story follows...

Marvel and Sony have had talks about forming some kind of Spider-Man alliance on the big screen, including the possibility of including the webhead in Captain America: Civil War. Unfortunately for fans, those discussions eventually fell apart.

Additionally, it has been revealed that an animated Spider-Man comedy is in development at Sony from producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord (22 Jump Street, The Lego Movie).

The Wall Street Journal has the report on this matter, one which is near and dear to the many comic-book fans’ hearts who have often and vociferously wished for Spidey to somehow join the Marvel Studios cinematic universe. The character’s movie incarnation, of course, is contractually in the wheelhouse of competing studio Sony. Rumors had been floating around in recent months that Spider-Man might somehow be reunited with Marvel, and now it seems that chatter was accurate... if ultimately premature.

The leaked information on the discussions Marvel and Sony had comes from the trove of documents that have poured out of the latter studio in the wake of the hacking scandal it has been hit with.

“The e-mails reveal extensive discussions between executives at Sony and Marvel owner Walt Disney, all the way up to their respective chief executives Kaz Hirai and Robert Iger,â€￾ says the paper. “In an Oct. 30 e-mail, Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad tells [Sony motion picture chief Amy Pascal] about a potential scenario that would see Marvel produce a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies while Sony retains ‘creative control, marketing and distribution.’â€￾

How Sony would retain creative control seems unclear considering the tight reign that Marvel’s Kevin Feige holds over his studio’s output. But still, Pascal reportedly relates in one e-mail that Marvel wanted to include Spider-Man in the upcoming third Captain America movie, Civil War. The character is of course an integral part of the comic-book version of that story.

All these talks eventually “broke downâ€￾ and Sony, according to this report, was as recently as late November planning a “Spidey summitâ€￾ in January to discuss the in-house future of the franchise. Aside from the previously revealed Sinister Six, Venom, and all-female Spider-Man character spin-offs, those plans also include Miller and Lord’s animated comedy.

Stay tuned for more on the Spidey/Marvel/Sony situation as we have it, True Believers!

Yeah but then Sony was all like

"Screw it, we don't need Marvel. We'll just go make more shitty Spider-Man movies."

Well with Sony's hacking problem, & the loss of revenue of at least 4 movies (downloadable for free, if you want to tell the hacker where you are)

A partnership with Marvel suddenly seems like a much better idea than 3 weeks ago. But with all these emails gone public its hard to really make a deal.

But I could see it happening. As its a much better idea than a Aunt May Spy movie, or villians without Spiderman.

There is a rumor now that Sony Japan may force the studio to relinquish the rights back to Marvel Studios.

They had a 60/40 (Marvel/Sony) deal in the works that didn't go through.

I'd imagine they'd have Marvel write the script share production costs & Sony distribute, market the film long before giving up the rights entirely. (Which would earn them $0)

The fallout from the hacking scandal is going to cost Sony a shit ton over the next couple of years....expecially as they uncover more and more shit they said about actors, producers, directors, etc.

At the very least the upper management can kiss their careers goodbye

http://www.latino-review.com/news/marvel-wants-a-fresh-start-with-spider-man-without-andrew-garfield
IF the Marvel/Sony deal were to go forward, Andrew Garfield would no longer be Peter Parker and any baggage from existing films, Raimi or Webb, would be non-canonical, Marvel doesn't want any part of those films. The idea is that the Spider-Man romance movie has been played out over five installments, so any new Spider-Man films would focus on the difficulties of being a teenager and a superhero with a romance side-story, not the film's focus. Marvel also thinks that the origin story is well-trodden territory, so any Spider-Man movies under this deal would begin with Peter Parker already leading a dual life. Spider-Man making his debut in Captain America: Civil War is still a distinct possibility and would serve as the character's introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But as of now Spider-Man will NOT be in Civil War. I was told that they have a script nailed down.

I really wonder if this mess will help or hinder. It causing so much more discussion about how everyone wants Marvel to have control over Sony and Sony has to know that. Are they gonna be stubborn in light of that or do what will likely make them more money?

Sony knows from the 1st set of Spiderman movie (Tobyman) that Spiderman can make A LOT of money. So with the second trilogy that isn't making anywhere near the money it should, & generally stiring less enthusiasm. There is an internal struggle within Sony to either

1. keep the new cast but try to fix what's wrong with it. (Which has been the choice Sony has been leaning with.)
2. Reboot & basically say the last reboot was a mistake (possible carreer ender for some in Sony) & risk making the same reboot mistake as last time.

Sony from a business prospective can't be keen on Marvel coming in to fix their mess & take/share most of the profit.

However the computer hack has changed the game because suddenly Sony pictures may now be in a fight to stay in business. In which case this off the table discussion has grown new legs.

The powers that be at Sony (spiderman wise) are no longer the ones making the final decisions.

Venom Or Carnage Could Be Main Villain In SPIDER-MAN - SINISTER SIX Team-Up Film

More leaked emails from Sony have surfaced online and these provide details for their Spider-Man franchise, whether the Marvel deal happens or not. If it's the latter, future films could include Ultimate Venom, Sinister Six and possibly Carnage.

By nailbiter111 - 12/12/2014

The "Sony Hack" continues to produce tantalizing behind-the-scenes information regarding Sony's Spider-Man franchise. The latest emails to leak online involve Spider-Man film producer Matt Tolmach, Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Amy Pascal and Columbia Pictures president of production Michael De Luca. In it, Pascal informs De Luca that Tolmach would like to introduce Venom into the Spider-Man franchise, but doesn't think the character could support a film on his own. He would rather introduce Venom in the Sinister Six film. And that film will feature Spidey teaming up with the Sinister Six to take down an even bigger threat. Who could be more dangerous than the Sinister Six? Tolmach would like the main villain to be either Carnage or Venom. If it is the latter, Spider-Man will wear his black suit in the film. He'll remove it when he can't handle being teased about the look by members of the Sinister Six. I kid you not. And of course, whoever finds Spidey's discarded suit will then become ... VENOM!

By the way, kudos to Badass Digest for accurately reporting most of this information near the beginning of October, a week before this leaked email was produced.

In the follow up email, De Luca explained to Pascal all of the options their Spider-Man franchise had in front of them at that time. He brings up the previously-confirmed deal Marvel Studios offered Sony, which would allow Spider-Man to join the Marvel cinematic universe. To be more specific, Spider-Man would make a cameo in Captain America: Civil War. If the deal was agreed upon, De Luca reports that Marvel would introduce A BRAND NEW SPIDER-MAN. See you later, Andrew Garfield. De Luca seems gung-ho about the cameo. He thinks it could spark new interest in Spidey. Fans would look forward to Spidey's next film without Sony having to make a Sinister Six film just to put fannies in the seats. Either way, De Luca would be happy with whatever direction Marvel president Kevin Feige chose for the Webhead.

That's all based on the deal with Marvel actually happening, but as of right now we know it hasn't, and De Luca addressed that grim possibility as well. Wisely, De Luca proposed another Spider-Man reboot, but this time, it won't spend a lot of its time on Spidey's origin or his parents like The Amazing Spider-Man films did. De Luca also thinks Venom, Carnage and Hobgoblin would be nice additions to a reboot. He especially likes Ultimate Venom because his suit isn't formed from an alien symbiote. He'd like to explore the modern Spider-Man comic book stories written by Michael Bendis, Michael Strascynski and Brain K. Vaughn.

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp...

You know one of the reasons the Marvel films work? Because they don't try to shoehorn the hero's entire rogues gallery into the motherfucker. You've got the Sinister fucking Six, you don't need Venom or Carnage. *shakes head*

I really dug Garfield as Spiderman. He was perfect. The rest of the new films besides some of the casting (Stone, Field, Sheen) was atrocious.

There isn't a single idea coming out of recent Sony scoops that sounds like a remotely good idea besides re-rebooting Spiderman and letting Marvel have him, and ditch the origin story.

The solo Aunt May movie is absolutely retarded, and a lady-solo-film won't work without better introduction, and any Sinister Six film without a Spiderman presence is all but the dumbest fucking idea ever. They should just go ahead and make a third Garfield ASM if they're simply hellbent on making another goddamn film on their own, end that shit they started in ASM1-2 so there's at least some wrap up, and retire the rights for good to Marvel.

Goddamn, even Fox hasn't fucked up the X-Men that much. Fantastic Four, on the other hand... But who gives a fuck about the FF?

Well you may just get your wish (aside from the marvel part)!

Sony Has (Surprisingly Not Terrible) Plans To Reboot SPIDER-MAN... Again

With a pandering black Johnny, not me. Haven't read a lick of FF news since that was announced.

I don't want Sony fucking touching another reboot other than maybe distribution. Fuck that. No more reboots of reboots. I'll admit this last one was a total mess, but another reboot will just be confusing. No more Tobey, no Raimi. I liked those first 2 but 3 was so terrible, despite claims that Sony forced his hand on how awful it turned out. Sandman was a lame villain choice, the same as Electro.

If there's a new start, let Marvel breathe life into the MCU with him, especially with Cap, IM and Thor reaching their peaks (or way out, as it sounds).

Yeah, I really don't them sharing the character. I just want Marvel who is clearly more capable to handle Spidy. Sony needs to stay away.

One thing that's become very clear from this hack is that Sony has no plan at all. They are just winging it. Just throwing darts at a board and hoping something scores big.

This, this, a thousand times this.

I just wish the corporate suits would realize this. That, and stay true to the subject matter and characters. Nick Fury isn't black. The Black Panther isn't white. Electro isn't black. Doctor Doom isn't some smooth dude from California that shoots out lightning, completely without an accent from Latveria, an eastern European country, like the Baroness from G.I. Joe, which is now another "hip" girl from California now, and a brainwashed former fiance from a G.I. Joe member. WTF ???? What's next ? an asian X-man Psylocke that used to be an englishwoman ?.

Oh.... wait. They did do that. N/M. As Moviebob says on the Escapist site, "Comics are weird". As Patton Oswald said on that youtube video saying he'd like to go back in time and kill George Lucas with a shovel (look it up, it's great.); " We as fans just love what we love. It's okay to give us the characters we already know and love.

Change just for the sake of change, we don't appreciate. It's not racism. No comic book fan wants a black Johnny Storm. It's not because we're racist, it's just because that his character isn't black. Notice that in the FF movies, Ben's girlfriend Alicia was black, even though in the comics she's white?.

And I could just sit back and cry about what they did to Deadpools character in that awful Wolverine movie. And since when were Wolverine and Sabretooth "brothers" ?. GAH ! As I said, what's next, Prof X and Magneto were gay lovers ?.

Just give me Spidey battling it out with Mysterio tooth and nail. I don't need Kraven, the Punisher, The Condor, a "new" Green Goblin/Hobgoblin, and Spider woman, just because they can shoehorn them in there, to make money.

K-Tiger, if you ever come down Tennessee way, I'm buying you a beer.
