Generally they were designed for 1:144 scale Gundams, but you'll find they work with most smaller scales if you daisy chain enough of them together.

No, this one was mixed-media. Wood, metal and fabric, much like the real thing. I'd be inclined to keep it as-is, seeing as it's not built to be disassembled, and taking it apart would be necessary to do an proper repaint.

It wouldn't take much to get it figure ready. I think just taking out the firewall and divider between the front and back seat. I'm not sure if there would be shoulder width issues, but it should be fixable if there is. I know just the head to use for the crew, too...
