Glad you posted this. I've been racking my brains on doing the fore and aft ends of gun pods for my Huey. This should work.
As for the the FLIR, do the same thing esssentially as the weather radar snoopy nose, except use a marble and use a bit of putty to kind of build the case up around it...
They actually saw more dutty as mobile fire support. I don't imagine that a 105 round dropped on a German tank would have much trouble killing it.
That's not to say that they were any better protected from the HV 75s and 88s of the German MBTs.
Consider the environment this thing will be in and paint accordingly.
I'm always fond of olive drab, but olive drab mixed (not literally, but different pannels and parts in one or the other) is pretty interesting as well.
Maybe add a patch panel or two in primer or a different color...
