Annnnnnnyhoo, unless your H.I.S.S. is tooling around a 19th century English industrial town, a Kentucky coal mine or a Kingsford charcoal plant, you aren't gonna be doing a whole lot of predominately black weathering.
Not unless it's on an acrobatic team.
If German lozenge wasn't so goddamn hard to paint i'd seriously consider doing my Fw 190D-9 in a WWI/II mixed livery.
The only time i use black weathering a tank is on exhaust areas. I cut black pastels in with other colors to simulate dust, but those are usually the only times.

You've got a bunch of ragtags operating a tank period, so nothing is sacred.
The only issue with the 12.7 on the FAV is that it sits too far back for a figure to use.
Here's what you do with the side racks: Stop using them as such and sculpt some ERA blocks there. They really don't pack anything up there, the narrowness is not a toy design oversight.
