Time to update an old toy to fit into my 1:18 universe.

I used vegetable oil to remove the original stickers and then several layers of paint and sanding to remove all of the glue residue.

Basecoat of Krylon Fusion OD Green:

After a wash of light muddy colors followed by a black wash: (amazing all the paint work put into it to make it look like a 30yr old toy. )

I need to document step by step to appease all the people who demand pics for my paint tutorial.


And I've already given up on a scratch build and will be cheating big time to achieve the canvas top. End result will be attractive and repeatable.

Other than the canvas top i really have to say this thing is beneath your ability, especially after all the fantastic work on that KV.

interested to se how you do the cnavas top as i was planning to do the exact same thing to Big Lots IFV...i planned to cut the back off and turn it into the APC...

Found some square dows at Walmart and said what the hell. This is just me screwing around ghetto style while drinking until I can get the real canopy in place. I guess that makes it a field repair?

I think I'll round the corners and see how it comes out. I have enough fabric to make 12, so no harm in trying out multiple solutions.

I never had the APC but would love one in 25th reissue style. This is a cool project, can't wait to see it done. That last shot is killer, showing the real canvas.

OD paint, watered down a helluva lot. Hell, you may want to dye it.

So basically perform a green wash on it. Sounds better than spraying it.

That canvas top came out nice PCS. Dying it would really put that over the top.

Good call on the color Ktig, it came out great. I guess I did well picking a fabric because it did not soak thru and the inside remains a dingy white. Awesome.

Looks real good, PCS. If you do another cover you may want to try tea-staining.

Tea staining? There was some muslin cloth at walmart that was tea stained. I'm guessing you just brew up some tea with the fabric in the pot?


Thanks Hun. I was just screwing around since I had the house to myself lastnight, but my half-assed, no measuring, Sailor Jerry soaked idea ended up working. I'm fairly amazed I built it.

I'm going to try to get a more uneven appearance to the tarp coloring. There is plenty of pattern when you are up close, but from viewing distance or in photos it looks too uniform. I need to use the stage makeup approach.

I found it at Walmart, but never looked at the tag. I'm guessing it's real canvas by the way the paint did not soak thru. I have a tremendous amount of it if you need some.

how thick is the material?...i've seen some at Michales/Hobby Lobby that was pretty thin that i thought would work well

One thing I forgot to mention, the watered down paint shrank the tarp material, making it nice and tight unlike Eddie's hole.

It's really thin. I think any of the muslin materials would also work, I just stumbled upon this and grabbed it instead.

Sadly, that statement is full of truth.

Yay or nay on the .50cal? I have to sacrifice my super humvee's roof to do it, so no experimentation allowed.

I say nay. It would look way better as a transportation vehicle. It just doesn't look right on the fabric canopy.

I would cut a strip of the humvee roof with the ring in it and it would run from the front to the first rib. I can put it above or below the canvas. I'm torn because I can make it look good with or without. Tough call.

I guess the real question is: do you guys think it is too boring as a plain transport vehicle or should I spice it up and mimick the original Joe APC?
