While there are plenty of examples of people who do not have a healthy balance of adulthood and their interest in toys/stuffed animals/etc., the writer apparently doesn't get that grown adults (usually men) actually can be productive members of society that fully support their families and still enjoy a good "toy" or collectible on their desk or shelf.
I think the growing surge is related to the fact that we grew up in a better time, and highly enjoy the nostalgia of looking back to it. If it didn't suck so often to be a full time adult these days, maybe we wouldn't value toys and collectibles that harken back to the past with so much affection.
