Here's a quick and simple tutorial on how I modify and customize factory figures.

Items required:

Paint ( I use military tan, a decent shade of brown, and a wash for skin tones

Basic figure: I'm using the Retaliation 3 Pack Roadblock. Decent amount of skin for detailing, and a large base to try and show.

Brushes: I'm not a technical or specific person. So whatever feels comfortable to you, go for it.

Steps (finally)

I tend to start on the clothing. Light tan brushing on the shirt and pants. Heavier brushing on the knee pads and boots (to show dried dirt).

Now, I'm going to go over the skin with brown, 1 to soften the camo lines and to add some darkness to Mr. Johnson.

You can begin to see the change.

And finally the wash to complete him.

I apologize for using this guy as an example, just didn't have any stock figures to use.

Hope this helps!

I'd start with the wash, then follow up with the drybrushing once that dries. :)

Not knocking your work though, the end result looks great.

Just a dab of paint and they look so much better. Hasbro=lazy.

But....WHAT is "wash"???? I understand about the paint part but I'm still not sure about the wash part!

That figure looks so much better when finished, but I'm afraid to tackle my 300-plus Joe and Cobra figures if I don't know what I'm doing!

It's a diluted paint. You can buy bottles that are only used for washes, or make your own. Just remember if you make your own: more water than paint. That way it seeps onto the details in the figures

Be careful with windex though. That stuff contains ammonia, and sometimes lots of it. Breathing it in constantly can lead to lung infections and other assorted illness. I stopped using Windex because of some stories I read.
