With utmost respect NSA, I don't think kids were the ones buying the Cobra Island packs or POC packs or different Hiss tank color variants. In my opinion, I don't think they have the money or the attention span given the amount of advertising, toy lines and video games thrown their way.

And all of those ended up at ROSS/TJMAXX... stop making my point :)

That's a common line from people, but no body has any concrete info to support this claim. It may, or may not, be true. All we have to go on is a forum(s) of collectors stating they alone are keeping the line alive.. but surely there has to be other people, kids, parents, non-forum-goer's who are buy stuff as well.

Until Hasbro breaks down some kind of detail on where the sales are taking place (BBTS/Online vs Brick-n-mortar at least), we can't claim any one segment is keeping the line alive.

And really, if collectors had as much clout as people seem to think, I think that Hasbro would be listening more.

This right here. Last Christmas I ran into a few parents that were actually perusing the GI Joes for potential gifts for their kids, so it's obviously not JUST collectors.

I think Hasbro needs to make stuff that's in the middle of the road that both kids and collectors can enjoy. Like the 30th Steel Brigade, he came with accessories (guns) but didn't have anything ridiculous that was specific to a particular market/age group. For example the over-sized spring launchers for unimaginative kids or all that itty bitty tiny bullshit that came with Low-Light for obsessive compulsive collectors. Does anyone here still honestly have that tiny bullet or the antenna to the radio? I sure as hell don't

But I do agree that kids are not as into toys as much as they were in the past, which has to be hard on a company that specializes in TOYS.

I'd prefer they had a line geared exclusively towards collectors, and one that was just for kids.. but even that would have issues, with people bitching about costs (It'd cost a lot more per figure due to smaller runs, etc), it'd likely be on-line only like the MOTU kinda stuff.. all sorts of problems.

I think they manage to balance both sides pretty well, though neither gets exactly what they feel they want (Kids don't want detail, they want fun).

However, I will say this was a real marketing blunder for Hasbro having it at SDCC. Why have hundreds of Jinx figures in one city for a short period of time when you could have had thousands in WalMarts, Targets, Toys R US, in thousands of cities across the country and online in those stores; but also small joes, bbts, guru planet, toywiz, etc? Seems to me the latter would have been more profitable.

These are among the hammer strokes that have put action figures where they are. We won't even go into the cultural changes that are VERY key in G.I. Joe's near retail persona non grata status.

That is something to consider, but video games were around back in the vintage days too. Kids still get and play with plenty of toys despite the advent of gaming and the internet. If anything you could argue that the Internet gives better access to parents willing to pay the shipping, and that Video Games often inspire and influence how children play with toys. After playing COD and Medal of Honor back when I was a kid I loved reenacting D-Day and Stalingrad with my various army toys (Joes among them). I think it's a little too simplistic to say only collectors support the line, or that new medias have made selling toys extremely difficult. We should convince some Sociologist to construct a study. I wouldn't be surprised if such a study pointed to several different causes as the answers of our anxieties.

Beyond that I don't think either of those two mediums are responsible for Jinx being an SDCC exclusive or the articulation on the drivers that has given rise to a whole new set of anxieties. As for Jinx I wouldn't be surprised if that had more to do with that "female figures don't sell well" bullshit we were told when Zarana suffered the same fate..

I wonder if we'll get a White-hooded Jinx in the regular line.

Guess it depends how much she's actually in the movie. If she's in it a lot, then it would be very odd to not have a mass-market figure for her.

Yeah, but let's be honest, 90% games back then sucked. I stand by my assessment, with the additional provision that kids are leaving toys earlier for video games. Tell yourself society isn't different all you want, but it is and G.I. Joe is a product of a different time, like Americans who would buy War Bonds or tell a Pinko to fuck himself.

And I never said it had anything to do with Jinx, and anyone that thinks collectors are floating the line is a goddamn fool.

If I allowed my kids to play video games everyday, or anytime they want, they would never play with toys again. As it stands now, they get to play games 2 hours every other day, thats it.

I personally think hasbro does a decent job catering to all parties. if they only made for collectors, we would lose future collectors. they need the kids, they need the neons sometimes, they need to change from time to time. Without any of them, the line dies. Are all their changes knockouts to us like POC, no, but at least they keep trying and i am happy for that. Maybe i dont stress to much because I look at molds over colors. I can add the colors I prefer.

The one thing I do think hasbro could do better is advertising. Commercials. Those commercials they had when i was a kid where the kids shrunk down to Joe size and played inside the dios were the best toy commercials ever IMO. My kids loved them when I showed them those commercials on the DVD sets. The cartoons did not envigorate my boys into joes. but after seeing those oldschool commercials they wanted most of the figures they saw. Too bad they were old figures. lol.

I'm not suggesting that society is exactly the same, I'm just saying that you maybe over estimating the effects of the changes society has gone through. I personally don't think any one particular thing has placed the GI Joe franchise into the under appreciated brands it is today but if I had to guess it'd be Hasbro's poor marketing and a lack of faith in the brand. You also have to consider the fact that Hasbro seems to display any faith in the brands ability to succeed without a movie to back it up. Their mismanagement of Resolute and Renegades is evident of that. They've also completely and utterly failed to promote and advertise the brand like they do other brands like Star Wars and Transformers. There are no 30 second television ads of GI Joe toys.

I think Hasbro just has a bad business model with the franchise. I know people like to say that no one wants to sell a military based toy out of this odd notion that everyone would think it'd be too controversial, but parents buy that Chap Mei crap and PTE stuff for their kids all the time. They don't even need to advertise that stuff. Star Wars The Clone Wars is a cartoon with gratuitous amounts of political based violence, it's one rape scene away from being "The Trooper With The Jedi Tatoo". It's principle is the exact same thing as GI Joe, Bad guys versus Good guys with lazers. If that cartoon sells toys without anyone bitching about it indoctrinating children so can GI Joe. If GI Joe toys simply had cool kick-ass commercials like they did in the 80's I think they'd be more appealing to kids and teenagers (the nerdy ones that still buy star wars crap despite video games). All they have to do is put a certain spin in the commercials that makes the GI Joes come off as lawful keepers of world peace and Cobra as assholes, you know like they always did.

Do kids care about an ARAH-colored Jinx? No way. Only collectors do. Thus it's a perfect fit for a SDCC exclusive.

Whoa whoa whoa...Sci-Fi, Airtight were both at retail, albeit shortly, and they are both crazier colored than Jinx...and all three were in a Renegades so they could even have backed her up at retail with that...what about Hazard Vipier?...purple Techno-Viper?...these are all bright colored figures, which is usually blamed on kids...

They're sadistic a$$holes, it's that simple...

And Sci-Fi and Airtight we're obviously for collectors, as well as Lifeline and Techno-Viper, and they were packed in waves with other figures.. that were either from the cartoon or army builders.. seems like the perfect wave to me.

3 or 4 straight figures for collectors in a wave is pretty good?

Either way, having Jinx be a SDCC exclusives guarantee's that collectors will get them instead of kids.

I can see maybe why she was an SDCC figure, but I honestly expected to see a red-suited Jinx in the movie line, honestly.

I figured from the start that we'd see less women in the Retaliation line than we did in ROC, considering that there are fewer female main cast members, but also because they didn't perform well in the first film (too many revision cases and ugly designs for half of them probably didn't help). I figured 1-2 Jinx figures (1 in the red training gear and 1 in the yellow/black gear) and 1-2 Lady Jaye figures (1 in her "army" gear and probably one other in some other get-up) but I figured 2-4, no more.

I expected them to do something more fringe like a President Zartan or Kwinn as this year's SDCC figure, but I figured it may swing more movie-geared. Which it did, I just wasn't expecting Jinx.

Now, I love the Jinx figure and plan to get at least the red one, and I'm just as tired as everyone else of paying $40+ for ARAH figures in the 25th/30th construction, but I don't so much mind paying that price for an SDCC figure so long as it's good. At least she looks amazing, unlike some of the film-centric toys that we've seen in the last few days.

I can only imagine the bitching if Kwinn was the SDCC exclusive.. or anything really. Was the Destro set the .. oh wait, Suited character.. they can't win unless they make the SDCC character undesirable.

Worked at a halfway house for kids and they fought over their Nintendo playing time privledges. God forbid a kid exceeded his time by a minute or all hell would break loose. I brought in some Joe comics and figs and of all 8 kids in the house only one was interested. The rest were, "Russ, Nathan's time up and he won't let me play." Followed by, "Shut the f### up ###hole". Fun times.

Another Hasbro marketing questioning? Why was there no Gi Joe video game like their Star Wars one during the Bastard era and beginning of the 25th to compete with COD?

Kwinn would have been a good exclusive I felt. It's a character that realistically only adults are attached to so why possibly waste a retail spot on someone like him? At least it will be easier to have a UPS driver now if he is on the shelves.

I agree.

But now since he's a UPS driver they can use the 5 points of articulation on him:rolleyes:

Cool Breeze would have been another. Finally though, Jinx's new T crotch looks great. I hope it doesn't have the tendency to break like ARAH figs in the past. Nothing more worse in this world than a woman with a broken crotch.

When the hell did Jinx get named? I recall her being "Classified" on her original file card, now she's "Kim Arashikage"? Was that from Renegades, or farther back?

That's definitely from Renegades. It might go further back into the sigma sux or valor vs venom line thou

Seems like a perfectly reasonable excuse.. and just as valid for SSG Slaughter and Zarana before them.

Again, I think it'll depend on how much screen time Jinx really gets in the movie whether or not she deserved a retail presence.

Okay, according to wiki. Her name change first started in 2006 with a devils due comic:

After some time, the G.I. Joe team reformed, but it was a much smaller group of specialists, called America’s Elite. Although Jinx is not a member of the new team, she serves as a member of the reserves. She stars in Special Missions - Tokyo, a 2006 one-shot comic set in Tokyo as part of the Special Missions series, focusing on some of the fan favorite team members that have not been seen since the end of the original series including reservists Wild Bill, Gung Ho, Clutch, Rock N' Roll and Budo. Her profile in the comic reveals her name to be Kimi Arashikage, cousin of Tommy Arashikage (Storm Shadow). However, it states that "Kimi" might be just a nickname

I'm betting they'll pull something similar to the Renegades backstory for her. Her name is, after all, "Kim Arashikage", which would put her as Storm Shadow's relative (assuming that's what his name was for ROC's canon... "Tomisaburo Arashikage").

I'm betting that they reveal Zartan as offing Hard Master from ROC, and by the end of the film SS teams with the Joes or some other triangle shit like that.

That's pure speculation, but that's how I see it playing out. And I see Jinx as playing a semi-significant role, if they play up the ninja as much as the toys seem to hint at. The first film didn't have so much ninja nonsense in the toys. We've got a lot more in this film so far.

I'm sure we'll see the yellow/black Jinx, but probably nothing else in the main line. I wonder if they'll reveal those 14 figures at Toyfair?

From what has been released and rumored so far, the movie is going to be loaded with ninja action. It wouldn't surprise me if they Have Zartan kill the hard master, of course they might use FF too since he has a prominent role in the movie now.

I really hope they don't have SS join the joes. I hate Joe SS. I like the depth of his backstory in the OG Marvel run and the fact that he has honor and such but it fits so much better when him and SE are enemies. They are the 2 "superheroes" in the mythos and when they are at each others throats, it keeps SE occupied and out of the way so the more military Joes can shine.

With all that being said, I fully expect them to make SS a Joe in the movie because that is absolutely what I don't want.

I didn't think about Firefly. I've been watching ROC on USA tonight, and just saw the death scene for Hard Master. It has a SS sword as the murder weapon. You know that Zartan "Storm Shadow" disguise on the Retaliation figure? I'm betting we see a retconned flashback and Zartan impersonated SS or some shit in the past and that's the loose tie-in.

That's me grasping at straws, consider it nothing more than boredom. :)

I can totally see it happening.

It's also very possible that they completely ignore what Rise of Cobra did since they are ignoring as much ass possible already. Also, Hama turned FF into a Ninja Hybrid, retaliation could too

I don't even remember ROC really.. didn't CC and Destro and Baroness all get put in prison on the FLAGG or something? Zartan was president.. I don't remember Firefly at all..

-Zartan became the Prez
-CC and Destro were imprisoned on the Flagg
-Baroness went to jail/mental health clinic
-Storm Shadow died
-Mindbender ???

FF wasn't in the first one

SS died? Oh.. in the ice.. fight.. thing.. but wasn't it implied that he totally wasn't really dead? I can't remember.

Mindbender? Fuck.. he was there too? Man that movie was a clusterfuck.

Yea I guess they never said he was "dead" but he was sliced up and fell 50 feet into the "sinking ice" into the ocean. So yea um he lived lol

Mindbender was in the flashback with Rex Lewis aka Cobra Commander aka Duke and Blackcord's best friend and military scientist aka Duke's Fiancee Baroness's Brother.

CC referenced him later in the movie but didn't say if he was alive or around

Sheesh. I think I only ever saw it once all the way through..

They lost me in the very beginning with the AH-64 flyover.. such bad CGI.

I fucking hated the damn movie before I even watched it lol. I watched it twice all the way through :(

One in the theater and once on netflix
