Yeah, I really don't see a way to reasonably prepare for the nonsense that is the SDCC overflow with the current system. You can't scale up your hardware for ONE day, not even a day, maybe ONE HOUR. It's not financially responsible.
Even if they did a pre-order system or some nonsense, THAT system would get overwhelmed.. people would complain, etc. I really wish we could know the #'s of product that were available.. to see how many people DID get their orders through (100's? 1000's?).
I have to imagine the sheer number of hits on the website was ridiculous.. maybe they need to purposely release the product at different times, so all the Star Wars nerds/Joe Nerds/MU nerds/ETC are not hitting the site at the same time? This year everything seemed to hit at more or less the same time, so I think that contributed to the crushing.
But if you ANNOUNCE a date and time when it'll be available that only begs for MORE issues because then EVERYONE will be waiting, and feel entitled that they deserve one. I don't know. I *REALLY* don't envy the HTS.com people, and I thought it was hilarious that they put up a "we're in a meeting" message during everything. Super professional? Probably not, but hell, all they were going to get was yelled at.. so might as well.
I've shopped with HTS a decent amount, and have had nothing but decent experiences. I don't wait on the site with baited breath for things to get in stock, I don't have time to do that anywhere. But they had a lot of the PoC figures for a while, and at great prices (+10% off +shipping, still cheaper than CA retail!), so I bought stuff.
I hope they continue to sell by the Wave, as that still ends up being cheaper than BBTS for me.
