My 8 year old son, FINALLY interested in TF (he found all my old G1 figures and went apeshit!), couldn't care less about Scrapper's elbows.

And from what I hear, some 3P kits will fix the problems in a better way than Takara. And Hasbro + 3P should still be less $$ than the Tak version.

Yeah. All in all, I think the kits may jack the price up a little higher than Takara's version, but we'll have properly placed shoulders, better arms and hands, a better head, better arms for Scrapper (And possibly LH), a new extending crane boom for Hook, 'Cab foot' for Mixmaster, etc. I'll take that over just a few fixed arms and a different head.

Not mine, actually. Although I used some unlicensed art on mine for the display graphics (it was just an art piece after all) the actual Ark art was all done by me. I think theirs actually looks worse, and it was done by professionals! (Who were paid, I imagine.)

I still haven't decided which version (if any) I'm getting for my shelf, but for my son, who is very happy with my G1 bricks, this is more than enough.

It really comes down to what the Tak sets cost and whether or not the differences justify a presumably much higher price. And while all the Tak improvements are nice, I'm pretty sure I won't give a shit when it lives in Devy mode on my shelf, never to be touched.

All the 3rd party new reveals at TFcon...they've (for the most part) moved on to such obscure stuff that I'm really starting to lose interest. It's mostly stuff I've never heard of before or decos of characters I know, but are out of a new comic or toon that I don't give a rats tush about.

*shrugs* Money saved!

There is still SOOOO much G1 stuff. Jazz, Mirage(s), Sunstreaker(s), Hound(s), Insecticons (4x IIRC), Cyclonus, Scourge, Blurr, Rodimus.... just because a few companies are trying to find a niche by doing weird dinobots, pretenders, or modern comic figures, I think that shows just how widespread the 3P economy is now. Not everything is to the liking of 40-year-old G1 fans, but there are so many players making this stuff, there is still plenty to get excited about. Hell, my wallet can barely take the strain as it is. I can't imagine if there was more product aimed at me...

I don't blame some companies trying not to compete head-to-head with HasTak, FT, XTB, & Badcube. It's a lost cause to be a small fry in the Character X wars. As a fan I like the choices. If I was trying to feed my kids with a TF design, I'd rather do something a little different and have no direct competition on a given project.

Now, how you could like that MMC Sphinx is a whole different story.... ;)

You lost my interest after those guys, but I underlined "new" for a reason. I don't recall one new thing that wasn't obscure (to me). Everything shown that I'm interested in has already been shown before. It's just further along in production then when it was originally shown.

And I could be persuaded to be interested in a Liokaiser(sp?), but most definitely NOT by TFC. :talktothehand: They can take their 20 year old engineering and design and shove it up their ...

Oh for sure theres tons in the pipeline...it's just, I'm disappointed that after a show showing all kinds of new stuff, I'm not excited by any of it. None of the new reveals that I look forward to. :grumpy:

The DJD characters are pretty exciting, even for someone like me that has completely abandoned the CHUG scale. If you haven't read MTMTE, as a TF fan, you're doing yourself a disservice. The other title is ok, but MTMTE is a run that will be revered in years to come. Arguably the best title on the stands, along with Lazarus, Saga, & Low.

WIP Megatron is interesting. Not thrilled with the initial drawing, but I expect DX9 to make it worth my attention, as their other WIP figures have been great. Teasers for other DX9 figures in the DX9 blitzwing thread. Looks like Octane & Springer coming... sometime. MMC Drift and Wing look awesome, even if those guys aren't a collecting priority for me.

No question, the 3P landscape is growing, and some of that growth is into areas that hold no interest for me. But, wow, there is a lot of product coming out. I remember in the City Commander days, I would buy nearly any 3P item as a novelty. These days, I'd be bankrupt if I didn't get picky pretty quick!

I was reading both MTMTE and RID. But I fell so far behind that trying to locate the back issues was impossible. I gave up right around the time Prowl replaced Hook.

Yeah, there is indeed a TON of new stuff coming out. Most doesn't interest me, but that might be a blessing in disguise. Looking forward to MMCs Mirage and MTs Hound. The Vodoo van bros look nice too. Unfortunate that with three comps doing them, not one of them can get them perfect. Mostly though, MTs Defensor has me the most excited...I can't wait!

RID is ok, but I don't get excited about it. To much political maneuvering, not enough else. MTMTE is a trip. Every issue, something comes out of left field, and two years later, it'll all tie back in. My biggest issue is keeping track of the non '84-'86 characters. You can always catch up reading them digitally, and if you know where to look, they are heavily *discounted*.

I'm not happy with the MMC Mirage at all and will keep Invisible. MT's Hound, especially the toy version, looks incredible. The biggest question is whether or not I'll get the FT version too.

And the Van bros... that situation appears to be a hot mess. TFC has the head and scale correct. VooDoo has the body design. TT has.... nothing. I think the official one is the worst of the bunch. That head sculpt is atrocious, and the buttwheels are unforgivable on an MP figure. VooDoo is just too damn big, and the heads are disproportionately huge on top of that. At this point, I almost feel like getting the TFC versions and just trying to "unbusy" them by removing paint and other details to give it more of a G1 look. But yeah, none of them are right.

If I had more money to blow, I'd be all over the two Warbo combiners, but I can't make myself drop a grand on those two guys.

I'm most excited about DX9 Carry, UT Buzzing, and all the DX9 and Iron Factory legends scale figures. They are more fun than they should be!

What about MMCs Mirage don't you like? I think he looks spectacular!

And the size/height of the Vodoo van bot modes bothers me not. So long as the alt modes seem to scale decently, I'm happy.

I'm all about bot size, and voodoo's are just a head shorter than MP-10, absolutely dwarfing the carbots. I know IH/Ratchet are taller, but not like an adult-to-child ratio. Side by side with carbots, they look pretty silly.

MMC Mirage... oh where to start.

1) I hate his head/face. I couldn't put my finger on why until someone compared him to Twiki from Buck Rogers. Boom, I can't unsee it.

2) He has no neck. I don't even care that he doesn't have neck plastic, but he doesn't have room for a neck, his head just sits flush on his torso, like a headmaster. It looks weird on an '84 carbot.

3) All his features are soft and rounded, as if he's made of marshmallow. I've never seen a figure with such soft features. I imagine him sticking out like a sore thumb on my MP shelf.

4) The complete lack of chrome, replaced with really cheap-looking silver plastic. CHUG-tastic!

5) All of the horrible misspelled names: "Ell", "Liger", and "Goof Year". WTF. They are already bogarting someone else's IP, so why suddenly get scared to use an actual brand name? I can forgive the first two, as I'm sure I could reprolabel over them. But no way I could look at "Goof-Year" on the tires for eternity and not feel profound shame.

You may ask, "But nacho, why such strong feelings about a figure you clearly don't like?" I'm ranting because I feel like so much potential was flushed, that's all. He seems to work for a lot of people, and that's cool. Here's the thing, if I had 20/80 vision and he was blurry or far away all the time, he'd probably look perfect. But the closer you get, the more this thing looks like a cheap dollar store figure. It just irks me because I want to like the figure, but they just made too many unforgivable choices.

[/rant]

Oh no, I get this totally. Very irritating to like the majority of a figure but small things screw it all to hell. So close but so far away is extremely frustrating.

Fortunately for me, I'm not seeing the small things (even though I'm aware of them) as much as I am the whole. Those tiny things fade away.

The Sunstreakers present a problem though. Parts of them both are good and bad. Neither perfect.

No kidding, I'm glad he works for you. The intent is clearly up my alley, but there are just too many issues I can't ignore.

Agreed, both sunstreakers have an almost-right problem too. Although Omni's shortcomings bother me far less than Badcubes. I normally like BC products, but their sunstreaker just misses the mark. I think it's the chibi chest. I understand the intent, but it looks like they squished it far more than was actually necessary. That and the feet that are way too off-center with the legs just kill it for me.

Omni's isn't perfect, but nothing I can identify as a deal-breaker. So I guess that's the way I'll go, you know, assuming it actually comes out... which isn't a given.

But that MT Hound "toy version" is sex on wheels. I'm not even a huge Hound fan. I like all '84 bots, but he's not exactly at the top of my character list. However that's a gorgeous figure. And the T&R Jazz looks great too. His legs catch a lot of flak, but they don't bother me at all. He looks like Jazz.

I'm surprised we didn't see anything out of XTB this weekend. I was expecting to see their Windcharger progress, but based on complete lack of info about any of their products, I can only assume XTB/KFC didn't show at TFcon.

I think I saw a slide for the Trans Ams. Nothing worth hunting down.

And yeah, BCs Sunstreakers legs/feet are just wrong. They need to fix that quick. The chest...I'm assuming since its fake that they had to make it tiny to fit inside the figures alt mode. Somewhere in between mustn't be possible.

The MT Hounds. That's a tough one for me. I prefer the toon color but the toy version might possibly be the most nostalgic cord striking TF ever released. And like you, I had very little love for the character up until now.

That Jazz. I LOVE the alt mode, but there's something about the bot mode that isn't saying "MP" like I'd want. Maybe that'll change once I see an actual production figure.

Sphinx is growing on me. That other Mirage just doesn't look like Mirage, at all. Sphinx is too soft in areas, but when compared to the other figures, he's only too soft in some details on the legs, and maybe the crotch plate.

Peep this guy's album for some comparison shots and for some scale comparisons of Devastator.

I am definitely getting rid of Hercules now. What a waste of money that was.

yeah, every pic I see of Sphinx makes me like him more than I already do. And side by side with Invisible makes Invisible look more like Terrible. They both have issues, but Sphinx looks far more "MP".

Hercules...Ugh. Unmodified is just awful. Even modified looks like it's a 15 year design. Most of TFCs does. I'm eagerly awaiting Gravity Builder.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I find the following picture helpful for comparison's sake. While I don't like Sphinx's face, I can admit that it's more G1 than Invisible's. But otherwise, I don't see what Sphinx gets correct. Once you look at the silver plastic hotdog buns on his knees, you can't unsee it.

Conversely, (via TigerBlade on tfw) a Kreo head and some reprolabels can yield something far more spectacular, imho. I'm very likely going to try this myself. But to each his own, that's why choices are great.

It's the crotch and knee/thigh area mostly that keep this from looking like it belongs as an MP figure in my eyes. Also, somehow, he looks busier overall than I think he should.

Those aren't critiques on the figure (he's a great looking figure), just critiques that keep me from thinking he belongs to "MP".

He looks more like he's made out of Erector set pieces than anything. It's way more angular than it should be, and kind of modular. Those knees look TERRIBLE, too. Just too angular and the wrong kind of boxy. The only things he's really got going for him is the less-stupid tampos, darker blue, and the chrome. Everything else is farther off.

Sphinx isn't perfect, but he matches a lot closer. I wish they'd at least chromed the engine cover and made it look more like an engine. It does look cheap, and a lot of the angles on the legs/crotch are too puffy, rounded-cornered. I wish he had SOME chrome (not overkill), not-so-goofy tampos (or rather none at all... fucking GOOFYEAR? Goddammit! It's on there at least 5 times! Why not make it Goldyear, you idiot Chinese Engrish motherfuckers?) and a darker blue.

Great insights as always, and thank you, MR, for sharing the website of Fabian Wong.

His photos and collection are truly impressive.

Where did he get the black Masterpiece scale Quakewave? Also, that translucent Masterpiece Sunstorm is amazing. He must have dyed a Masterpiece Ghost Starscream to get that effect?

I remember MMCs Rex figures being very angular. Lots of sharp crisp edges. Weird that they missed that mark on Sphinx.

Anyone else very meh about MP Tracks? Looks way too busy or something.

I'm just meh on S2 characters, with maybe the exceptions of Blaster and Perceptor which were featured heavily in S3 and the Movie. Although I'll probably get Tracks. My three favorite S2 carbots were Smokescreen, Red Alert, and Tracks... and those happen to be the ones they've made thusfar. No way am I getting more S2 bots though.

FYI, HLJ has a good deal on Tracks. ~$48 + shipping. I'm guessing that'll total to about $60, a sight better than any stateside retailer.

I'm all over any S1-S2 figures. More focused on S1 as S2 got more goofy, but I'm not opposed to any S2 characters by any means. The movie, post-Autobot-City-battle, is where I draw the line. S3+, is a total nope.

I'll potentially get an MP Galvatron to go with MP Roddy, but I am not dying for one. I don't even particularly care for Rodimus, and the figure doesn't blend at all with the rest of the MP styling. There's nothing else from the film's cast that I'd ever want.

Just sold my Wal-Mart Skywarp and extra TRU Thundercracker on CL yesterday for $200 cash. Not a great price for them, but I didn't lose money on them, so no tears lost there. But at least I'm starting to clear out some shit, slowly!

Not sure if I'll get the Japanese Thundercracker. I like his colors better than the TRU one, but I'm honestly sick of buying fucking Seekers. I saw that the TRU Starscream sold out almost immediately with online preorders. Assuming his torso pegs together better and locks in place? Otherwise, not worth it if you already have the Takara version of MP-11 like I do. (Although the flight stand is a better accessory than that silly cape and crown, and the price is fantastic.)

Guess you gotta be a big seeker fan to notice the differences in "new" ones. So far I just keep thinking they are a bunch of reissues.
