Here's the thing I don't get: ROC had a rough budget of around $175M. Chu's film was $50M less and looked loads better, to even casual moviegoers who saw the first film and weren't impressed with ROC. I have heard a lot of folks mention that they wanted to see this one, and I'm not talking your typical manchild.
So to reshoot it, even if it's just to reshoot for 3D (doesn't seem to be the case as I expect new scenes) will add on to that budget. Considering they'd already wrapped shooting, that'll cost more than if they were still set up for shooting. A 3D re-edit alone could be anywhere from $50M to $100M or more with extra scenes shot.
If the film genuinely sucked, and it premiered in a weekend by itself, I still think it would have made money this summer. Maybe not, if it's so close to TDKR and Spidey. But even if it broke even, with the bad publicity of pushing it back 9 months, I can't see investing another $50-100M into it is a wise investment. At worst, push it back to August or September, and leave it the fuck alone. Sinking more money into a turd film won't bring back more money I don't think.
Maybe the overseas market is desperate enough for 3D to make it worthwhile. Personally, I think that gimmick sucks and never looks good, plus it gives me headaches. Just slap another few bucks onto the ticket price and call it a day.
