I only mention the lamp thing because with how I do it, my 2 lamps are 99% never facing the subject or even the box sides. I use the bought box with the screens though. I have to turn my lights away from the sides to get a more even, not too bright effect. And I'm using those blue-ish daylight bulbs too.
With proper fig placement and adjusting the lamps, I can usually get fairly clear, decent shots. I've come to realize that you just can't plop down a fig, turn on a light, take a pic, and be done. You really have to "play" with everything to get better shots, every single time. At least from my experience. And usually, I don't have the patience to keep messing with everything. Something I'm trying to work on though, but depending on what the subject is... it's a bitch.
