yeah the cropping part gets me too...and I agree about the Renegades CC head...it's the best CC head out there and NEEDS to be made in chrome...

I think this shot would have worked better with the chrome mask.

And I really need to get another cap. That Luftwaffe one makes him really look like a pilot.

Yup, the glare on a chrome mask woulda been sweet...

Do you have any of the Oktober Guard figures?...even Red Star?...they have decent caps...

I do not, but you bring up a good point. A peak cap would be better than crusher style. Maybe I should check Jesse's site?
Someone should get me a pic of that combo.

Hey KT...here's the three caps from the OG set...I like the first two caps best...If the star on the first one was a cobra sigil, that'd be bada$$

1/2. Red Star
3. Brekovs
4. Iron Bear

I definitely like Red Star's. The other two have a distinctive Soviet (or even British) feel to them.

Here's a shot of Thor with my light box. I need to get some white masking tape to cover seams.

The bulbs are a 100 watt GE Reveals in clamp on $7 wally world lamps. I want to get some Sylvania Daylight bulbs in the 100 watt range, but that's gonna require a Lowes/Home Despot trip.

Definitely open for bulb suggestions.

Definitely not softs. These are step up, those periwinkle (read: pastel blue) bulbs that are supposed to enhance the color spectrum. Should I just go get some 100-150 watt clear bulbs?

I'd like to try some of the Edison grade ones, but I don't know anywhere that sells them, or perhaps I just miss them on the shelves.

What I want is a light that's a bit "cooler". These still seem to be a bit on the yellow side.

You should get some!...the pic you took looks fine IMO, but now you have me wondering if the color of the "white" light would look even better...I use them around the house and do notice a difference, but don't know how it would work with a light box...

Some reason I'm not getting consistent lighing. Reckon I need to gut some notches so I can get the lamps deeper into the box.

KT,

What does this box look like? Can we have a pic of the setup? Are you moving the lights between shots, or placing the fig in a different place? How about the camera angle, does it change?

You shouldn't have to place the lights closer really. Unless you're trying to create different tones or effects.

So are you consistent with the lighting, and the subject placement? If you move the ZV back about an inch, would it pick up more lighting? From my experiences, the colors on the figs can play havoc with you, making some seem too dark or too light - making hot spots.

I would go with lamps that you can move, for optimum balance on each fig, instead of clipping lights on the box that you can't adjust really. If that's what you're doing.

My clamp-ons are adjustable, at least to an extent. Both shots had figures in roughly the same spot.

I'll just fiddle with it when I have more time. I'm not convinced the bulbs themselves aren't a small part of the issue.

I only mention the lamp thing because with how I do it, my 2 lamps are 99% never facing the subject or even the box sides. I use the bought box with the screens though. I have to turn my lights away from the sides to get a more even, not too bright effect. And I'm using those blue-ish daylight bulbs too.

With proper fig placement and adjusting the lamps, I can usually get fairly clear, decent shots. I've come to realize that you just can't plop down a fig, turn on a light, take a pic, and be done. You really have to "play" with everything to get better shots, every single time. At least from my experience. And usually, I don't have the patience to keep messing with everything. Something I'm trying to work on though, but depending on what the subject is... it's a bitch.

One of my better shots, for example -

I've got mine pointed at the back corners of the box "ceiling". I can play with it more after I get the battery in my camera replaced. Really can't do much with only 10-15 minutes of shooting time on a charge.

Did manage these earlier. It's nice to have a place to shoot, even if there are kinks that need working out.

Definitely. Keep playing around, I'm sure you'll get it where you want it.

What exactly are you using light-wise, for your blue shots?

A half-dead multibulb LED hand light and one of those light bases for laser etched crystal doodads. It cycles through several colors, and just happened on blue when the shutter closed.

Ugh...I don't envy you...getting the lighting right is tiresome...I really struggle with getting enough light on the subject and getting too much glare, even with indirect light...so I end up trying to brighten shots with camera settings and well, hair pulling ensues...

I'm doing it mostly so I can get consistent photos for customs.

Speaking of, can't wait til that SW head gets here. That hat is the last thing Seaman Sam needs before posting up.

I'm guessing it should come today...if not, then tomorrow

It's the white one?

Ya know, I'm wondering what the effect of using something like 90 watt equivalent LED lights would be. I know LED bulbs in general are expensive, but maybe they'll throw out the kind of light I'm looking for, and I wouldn't have to fiddle with batteries on flashlights.

K, I'm really liking those pictures of the Cobra Commander. An alternative hat for CC could be the one off that Russian commander guy from the Indiana Jones crystal skull line. Although I'm not sure it's a seperate piece, some cutting/dremeling may be necessary.

It's probably like Standartenführer Vogel's, which was sculpted on. I'll have to see what I can find. The crusher cap just looks a bit too informal for this particular CC.

A little less blur, a little more light and a few props and this might have been a good one.
