I still would like someone at Hasbro to explain how it's a good idea to make such terrible figures in Waves 1 and 2, and then go ball out with GREAT MOVIE RELEVANT figures in Wave 3.. why not have the figures that are actually representative of the movie, oh I don't know, ON THE SHELVES when the movie comes out?!

Grrr.

Because then the chilrens (and us morons) wouldn't buy up the sh!tty ones first AND the good ones later...we'd just buy the good ones they release first and the sh!t ones out now would collect dust until the end of time...

I don't even see how it makes them more money.. if they released the quality stuff first and it kept selling.. then just make quality stuff!

I wonder what the profit margin difference is between a figure like the shitty Flint and the "Ultimate Flint".

Same logic that didnt have Renegades figures on the shelves until long after the series aired?

Yeah, that's what I was gonna say.

Have they EVER gotten the media-accurate-tie-in figures out on the shelves at the right time with the corresponding media, besides ROC, since the 25th line hit?

Resolute? Nope, 6-months to a year in advance, then nothing, then like a year or 2 later to kinda-sorta complete the teams in 7-packs.

Renegades? Nope. Like a year after the show was cancelled? 6 months?

Retaliation? Well, they did have figures on the shelves for when they were supposed to launch the movie, then they decided to push the launch 9 months. And they still couldn't get movie-accurate figures on the goddamn pegs by the time of the launch. That there, may be the saddest one of them all. They had a built-in NINE MONTH DELAY. But, nope.

They could've launched the shitty wave 1-2 figures in January or February, but maybe stores weren't having it. Who knows.

Yeah I don't know, and they wonder why they can't get the brand going..

RoC was pretty good I guess, with the Desert Duke and Destro and Baroness etc in Wave 1.. I remember them having different case assortments with "movie" figures in one case, and the other had "expanded universe" or whatver.. like Flash, Helix, etc.

Of all the things RoC did wrong, they did a pretty good job with the figure design and marketing, etc. I found most everything at retail, and TRU etc had some good sales (2 for $10 etc).

Except for having every character in black, RoC's figures were okay. Realize, I'm only pointing out the black costumes as it reduces sell ability. Old fans hate anything that drifts that far from ARAH, and kids get confused if the common stereotypical good/evil color relationships are blended.

ROC's figures were the best part about ROC. Sure they looked like the movie characters (for the most part), which I actually avoided buying because I hated most of the actors save for the lady figures, and only got them since we don't get many womenses, but at least for folks who wanted movie-accurate figures, they bought them.

Sure, we got some real turds, too, but we also got some decent fodder. The worst part was just overproduction on the earlier waves. They really weren't that bad, it's just that you know you overproduced when you have the same wave 1 figures warming shelves months after the film is out of circulation in theaters, and you have backlogs of later waves still in warehouses.

Yeah, the juxtaposition of "dark colours" being "good guys" was kind of odd. I also didn't care for the blue pajama camo either.

But the figure construction and design was mostly solid, RoC was a boon for customizers for sure. I felt like it gave the figure designers some extra budget to play around with, especially for some of the later waves.

Seems like it was the exact opposite this time around. I wonder if the RoC stuff didn't sell as well as they hoped. I wonder what the 'goal' is? IM or IM2 sales? Probably some ridiculously number they could never realistically hope to reach..

On the basic tonal range, I'd make all of the bad guys' predominant color charcoal grey to black and all the good guys predominantly medium grey to charcoal. Black is a terrible military color anyways.

The blue camo sucked. Even if it was accurate to the movie camo, it would have still sucked. I just wished RB version 2 actually had the multicam.

I wish Desert Duke actually had multicam too.. I was glad he at least had some sort of coloring, but a more accurate representation would have been nice.

It was also stupid because COBRA has always been blue, and now the Joes are blue? I think it's a stupid color regardless of who's using it though. I though the Joes having their NAME embedding in their camo was such a stupid idea.. they're supposed to be this ultra super secret group.. oh hey lets put our NAME in our camo design!

Bah. The more I remember about that movie the worst it gets.

OD or coyote brown utilities is what they needed. Even in the real world everyone mocks the Navy uniforms, but at least they aren't baby blue.

I think multicam is a little much to expect from Hasbro. They'd just do it wrong, anyhow.

The Joes should've been OD green or desert camo. Cobra should've been either charcoal and navy blue or some darker shade of camo, if they were going to give them some camo.

What was confusing was making Joes the black suits and blue jammies, when Cobra has always been known to wear those colors. And then the Cobras were STILL black/gray. No idea who thought having the majority of the Joes in that blue camouflage was a good idea, but they DID have some in green. Why they weren't all consistent, I have no idea.

And I agree, having "GI JOE!" on all the fucking patterns was stupid. They still had that in Retaliation. I caught in on a closeup of Duke. And the Joe flag, which looks like some graphic designer spent 15 minutes designing a crest. Just awful. A secret military organization doesn't need a goddamn logo!

I think it would have been cool if they had a damn comic, or cartoon or.. game or something that happened between movies so they could have 'explained away' a lot of the stuff that people complain about. Baroness could have O.D.'ed or something.. the FLAGG was reassigned elsewhere.. Gen. Hawk retired.. etc etc.

Obviously they had a much smaller budget this time around, but hopefully it makes enough $$$ that they don't have to be cheap on the next go around. I felt that Chu did a better job with what he had than Sommers did.

Dunno about you, but I'd love to see that on a figure card: "Shitty Flint." "Fully poseable!" "Five points of articulation!" "New From Mattel!" "DEATH OF THE LINE!"

There is a shittier Flint than the single-carded one. There's that "Cycle-Action!" Flint. He actually has a good paint app on his head, but it's an otherwise useless figure.

Duke was still a Captain though in Retaliation wasn't he? Not likely to be running things.. unless the Joe force was massively scaled down.. and the Pakistani operation WAS pretty much everyone involved.

I could see this being true since Zartan had been in command the whole time, he could use budgetary measures etc to keep whittling down the GIJOE project until that was all that was left. A small, specialized QRF (quick reaction force). Maybe a couple of Generals fought to keep the JOE's around...

The strike was the last way to ensure they were eliminated..

This would make GIJOE 3 be a rebuilding story, on both ends.. GI JOE is starting new, but so is COBRA..

..

If they had used AH-64Ds and not As (where the fuck did they find those things?) maybe ALL the joes would have been wormfood.

Better yet, use Falcons or Strike Eagles. Might as well have made sure you killed everything in the bivouac.

Maybe the Apache assault was to make sure no one was able to be alerted and get to cover. Since they would be familiar with that sound for their escort. They did have cobra troops sweeping the area afterwards.

Since I FINALLY saw the movie and liked, but not loved it, I'm playing thread necromancer. I agree that it could have been much better, but at the same time it was that much MORE superior to ROC. It was a middle school kids' movie and I bought in. ROC was a bad movie with product placement shoehorned in. At least Retaliation tried to have a story somewhat relevant from Joe's history. FWIW, the Best Buy extended cut is bloodier and better, but the theatrical release is still cool. My wife despises Channing Tater and she even liked him in Retaliation.

The Rock as Roadblock as 'really the Rock' is much LESS corny than Sgt. Slaughter the wrestler/super soldier... umm somehow. Bruce Willis phoned it in, but anyone who expected anything else should be forced to watch Cop Out ten times in a row to connect with the reality of his current acting discipline. Lady Jaye had to have some weakness and daddy issues are the default for Hollywood and they were believable. It IS a common theme in military families. Otherwise, she would have been Xena, warrior dyke who needs no man or team. Jinx was useless, but be real; she always has been. At least she was hot. SE and SS were OK. RZA must have some SERIOUS blackmail material on a film exec because his "acting" in the movie wouldn't pass muster for an elementary school play.

I'm not going to pretend that Transformers or GI Joe had a strong, fleshed-out story in either cartoon or comic format. I've never read the TF comics, but from what I've read, they sound just as stupid as the cartoon. The Hama comics are moderate at best, and definitely more serious than the cartoon, but they're far from the masterpiece that Joe fans seem to wank themselves to sleep with.

The regular GI Joe comics were pretty bad most of the time because of what Hasbro dictated and having to bridge theme A to theme B through a constantly updating cast of characters. Todd McFarlane's pencil debut was in GI Joe. I defy any of you to find a single ounce of the style he later brought to Spiderman in his issue about Chuckles. GI Joe: Special Missions was where most of the really good stuff came from. I had a subscription in the mail (no shit, the mail) of it and loved every issue while I generally found the 'regular' comic one-dimensional. That Larry Hama did what he did under the restrictions he had does give him a pass on most things but I still remember Nth Man: the Ultimate Ninja.

Do I expect a Dark Knight?

Retaliation was FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR, ultra-mega, super-duper huge, way, way way, WAY better than that last turd of a Batman movie. Had there not been such a high bar set already, it would be different, but it isn't.

And FF got hit by the truck, HARD!...how were his legs not busted?...how did he not have a concussion?

...because he's Titus Fucking Pullo, Frank Castle, Issak Sirko (Dexter) and an interior designer and if they wouldn't let him act in Retaliation Ray Stevenson just channeled all that talent into badassery. Fuck a bunch of truck bumper.

Seriously? You're objecting to branding in a toy movie? Uniforms, logos, and mascots are all major rallying points for military units, and while Retaliation's were over the top, they're not without tons of precedent. ...and since when do people make fun of Navy camo? That shit is tight, yo!
