Yeah, had these been at retail, I would've picked more of them up...but being as they were so difficult to collect, I only have a very select few...

Same goes for DCUC...though they were at retail, I rarely saw them stocked...and when they were, it was the leftover never-heard-of-em figures...

I have what I want from both lines...cancel for all I care...

The problem with the MotUC that DID get a retail release? Packed with a DC character.

What in the fuck is that all about? You couldn't convince TrU to go for a Skeletor/He-Man 2 pack? You had to pack them with figures from a COMPLETELY UNRELATED PROPERTY?

Blah, this topic is gonna cause me to stroke out. All I can say about Mattel is they sure act like an amateur company, and not the 67-year-old, world's-largest toy manufacturer.

I'm surprised they haven't ridden Barbie into the ground yet.

Yeah, they pack a figure that's never been to retail, with a figure most people already have that's been out for years...I hate that they keep trying to find "clever" ways to force us to buy figures we don't need or want...

I understand the trend to taking collector focused lines out of retail. I get it. I would argue that MOTU cannot support a retail line. It's not 1982, and beyond a handful of core characters, they get pretty outrageous and laughable.

BUT, that doesn't mean you get to treat your customers like retarded children, borderline threaten your fans, and generally bully the people that still want to buy your products. I don't give a tiny rats ass about most of the figures these lines put out at this point. I'll selectively get one or two a year from MOTUC and DCUC that I deem worthy of a ridiculous secondary market price. When they finally go away, I'll not lose a minute's sleep over whether or not I should have subscribed to keep their flagging sales alive. They want us to open our wallets and write them a blank check every year. Prices go up, value goes down, and the characters get more obscure and less desirable. And it's OUR fault if/when the line fails. STFU.

I'm not predicting the death of these lines... but I'm saying that maybe they should die.

PS I'm comically amused that DCD's first attempt at 3-3/4 scale DC figures is infinitely better than anything Mattel ever produced. I really hope those take off and that DCD has wild success thumbing their nose at mattel.

I don't think they have 12 figures that can get people to lock in for a full subscription.

Exactly. They've shot their wad. While I have a passing interest in a couple of the figures they have on the schedule for later this year, the figures shown for next year are beyond terrible. At the end of 2012, I'll be a Ram-Man away from ending my MOTUC collecting. Unless they put out a large beast or vehicle they haven't announced yet, there just isn't anything left.

$200 castle grayskull - Site UNSEEN

I'm not a MoTU collector, but I could see getting the castle, but not without knowing what the heck I'm purchasing.

I have the designs for a large toy box for my kid that will look suspiciously like Castle Greyskull, (But be more friendly to 1:18th)

Drop $200 (almost) blind?...not me...

Wonder what the minimum number is, cause I highly doubt the preorders will be very high...

Interested to see what it looks like though...

The arrogant assholes at Mattel really go too far.

They are on par with Nancy Pelosi in terms of total absurdity.

"You have to give me your money before you are allowed to know what I will do with it!"

Sheesh.

Ten bucks says this random "Hey, we will make Castle Greyskull" crap is some type of Hail Mary play for attention since their damn rip-off subscription service failed to garner any notable income for the company.

Well, look at the next three figures they showed. Scraping the bottom of the barrel. Octavia being pretty cool aside, at least.

The subscription service this year is what really conjured up memories of crazy Nancy Pelosi and her democrat idiots in tow.

"You have to pass the bill in order to find out what's in it!!!" = "You have to give us your money in order to find out what kind of additional figures are coming out this year!"

Ugh...

Why in the hell cannot they realize that the line is NOT a 6-8 year event?

MOTU's popularity lasted a few years, and that was during the heyday of 80's swords and sorcery.

They should release what the fans want, and end the line.

Clearly the Mattel fools have learned nothing from their Ghostbusters line.

While I only get about half of the MOTU figures, I will NEVER buy into their subscription because they don't tell you what's in it. I'm not going to drop that kind of cash on what could be nine or ten duds.

That being said, looking at the quality of the figure designs, as well as the awesome update to the wind raider, I'll likely take the pre-order plunge if the design sketches look good. While they may be scraping the bottom of the barrel character-wise, the designs have been out of the park.

I look at it this differently than the figure subscriptions. Those are blind, as in you don't have a clue what you're getting. For figures, we're just begging for names (and not getting them). This is a bit different, in that we know inherently what we're getting, just not all the specifics or advanced prototypes. I can understand not wanting to sculpt and proto something this big without some certainty that there is real demand.

I'm the last person to defend mattel, as I think they do an extraordinarily shitty job managing this line. However, the 4H have produced nothing but top-notch designs, and if they put their name on a castle grayskull, then I'm going to get on board.

Movie Ghostbusters should probably be a 1 year line. That's all you realistically have for character selection.

Ray
Peter
Egon
Winston
Dana
Louis
Janine
That Government Asshole
Library Ghost
Gozer
Super Deluxe Bigass Stay Puft Marshmallow Man
Zuul/Vinz Hell Dog two-pack
Slimer as an accessory

The Real Ghostbusters line would likely be only a little more workable as there were a fair number of memorable ghosts/monsters in it. But they decided all TRGb deserved was fucking Mezco doll knock-offs and Minimates.

More info on the castle:

-Pre-Orders begin in the Fall. As of right now, they are shooting for a $200.00 price point.

-You will not be charged until Grayskull ships, just like with other Pre-Orders

-They should the designs to show off at NYCC. They won't be going forward with sculpting unless the minimum is met. (Think Kickstarter campaign)

-The minimum amount needs to be about what the minimum was for the 2013 subscriptions.

-No estimates on shipping as of yet. no electronics though, so it will ship internationally.

-They plan to base this off of Mark Taylor's original concept design for the vintage playset. Some things they plan to include are: three levels on the inside, working elevator and features just like the original playset, lots of accessories even including things like the scrapped "torture rack", the spire on the top of the Castle will hopefully be removable in case people don't want to display it (since it was only on the early artwork and not the final designs), and the play mat to go under the castle.

-This is a playset, not just a facade. It will fold up exactly like the vintage one.

Have to see the old concept art. Maybe they will pull it off, they've managed to cornhole MOTU collectors this far, they might as well stick around for the money shot.

It's hard to imagine any serious MOTU collector passing on this, assuming it's a major improvement over the original in size and detail.

While $200 is nothing to sneeze at, I consider this far less of a ripoff than $200 for a 1:18th jet that is a glorified model that can't be looked at twice without breaking.

I'd pay 200 for the right airframe, just like there are those that will pay that for this.

Who will get their money's worth at the end of the day is up for debate. I can recreate the T-Rex F-14 of Calvin & Hobbes fame, what can you really do with the proposed Grayskull?

nacho

My kids can actually play with it, rather than look at it from a safe distance... so in that regard, grayskull seems like a much better buy.

I'm not saying jets aren't worth $$$ either. I have two spotcats, f-16, f-18, etc. But my point was that I didn't feel mattel was ripping anyone off at that price point, assuming grayskull 3.0 really is a substantial upgrade over the vintage version.

I'm dubious that it will be, but it's a moot point to argue until it actually happens at all.

I don't have kids, so I'll def not be picking up a castle...the judgement from owning that would be harsh...but an accurately detailed and scaled 1:18th plane would garner a completely different response...most likely a positive one :)

Those are all awesome! Vintage MOTU box art is some of the best around, eve better than Joe and TF. Those paintings were always crazy-cool.

These customs reinforce my belief that the new price point isn't too high. If I tried to make a custom that good, I'd have more than $200 in it, and it would take me a lifetime.
